Davis Islands History

Davis Islands is an archipelago, which means it is made up of more then one island.  It was built by dredging up the Hillsborough river.  The excess dirt from the dredge was poured over-top of two small natural islands. The Islands were formerly know as Little Grassy Key and Big Grassy Key.

Dave Davis was responsible for the purchase of the islands for $350,000 dollars in the 1920’s.  He said he wanted the island to have a Mediterranean feel. Therefore, you’ll find plenty homes and buildings built with Mediterranean style.  Many of the historic buildings have received national historic designations.
